Is Christian Polygamy Wrong? April 11, 2009

People say that the Christian way is to have only one wife. But there is nothing Christian about having one wife.
There is a very familiar scripture
1 Timothy 4:
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Try as hard as I can, I cannot tell where in the bible it became a sin to have more than one wife.
Many know that in the Old Testament, several good people had several wives, King David, and Even Abraham.
So the question is, WHEN did it become a sin?
If anyone has a comment to make, let him speak. I did not ask for the three scriptures which instruct bishops and deacons to “be the husband of one wife”
1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1 Timothy 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Titus 1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
These scriptures on their own prove nothing. They do not say that having more than one wife is a sin. That is just an assumption. Really. I want you to be candid with me. What does it prove?
When people come with a pre-conceived idea, they immediately jump to the assumption, when reading these scriptures, that having more than one wife is a sin.
This pre-conceived idea is what I believe is referred to in the first citation as “doctrines of devils”.
I would like you to put that aside for the moment. What if I said to you, that those scriptures are not teaching us to have only one wife? Which is true. They are not.
Why doesn’t the Bible say anywhere else – “Have only one wife” as a direct command? Because it is not actually a sin, it is doctrine of devils.
The truth is, it says this NOWHERE.
Before you make the assumption, Look into the original greek.
People then tend to give long-winded replies, that distract from the main point.
The truth is, there is NO ANSWER to this question. No one can tell me WHEN it became a sin, because nobody knows!
And indeed, if nobody knows, then IT IS NOT A SIN.
I know it is not.
